The KISS principle is an interesting and valuable principle that I will be sure to think about from now on while producing work. K.I.S.S (Keep It Simple Stupid) is, as it suggests, about keeping things clean and simple. This can apply to any number of things from animations, web design, graphic design even personal planning.
I wish I had come across this phrase before I approached my last motion graphics project as I can confirm that I effetely did not apply even a hint of KISS to the entire project. It was all over the place, very complex, series of mix-and-mash which resulted in a piece of work I am truly unsatisfied. I feel that if I had approached it with KISS in mind the final out come would have been dramatically different. It is strange how I needed up with such a mess of a project because I would like to think that although I have only recently come across this principle, my previous work has some reference to it.
Although the project was a total disaster in terms of the out come, I am very thankfully for the existence and guidance it taught me. I learnt that I should stick to what comes naturally to me. Although it is a good idea to occasionally step out of your comfort zone in order to progress, and I would defiantly encourage it, it dose pay homage to stick to what your good at. In my case I believe that it is taking a basic idea and presenting it in an interesting, stylistic and minimal way. My last project consisted of me taking a basic idea and completely overhauling and complicating it, completely out of my character.
I am glad this stern and rather revealing lesson happened to me now rather then in the future as I am sure it would not be of any benefit to a future client or employee. So as of this day forward KISS is the word and a word truly worth remembering when producing work, or in fact general life.
